There are 50,653 possible three-character Minecraft: Java Edition usernames, and 50,643 of them (99.98%) are taken. These figures come from our own scanner, which looks at every one of them over and over, and are counted again every day.

Last counted on 5 October 2026.

How many 3-letter Minecraft names are there?

A Java Edition username can use 37 different characters: the 26 letters, the 10 digits and the underscore. Upper and lower case count as the same name. Three positions with 37 choices each give 37 × 37 × 37 = 50,653 names, and no shorter name exists, because three characters is the minimum.

How many are taken?

At our last count, 50,643 of the 50,653 had an owner or were still reserved after a rename: 99.98% of all of them. 0 could be claimed at that moment, and 10 are blocked by Mojang: they have no owner, but nobody is allowed to take them.

A three-character name therefore only becomes available when its owner changes to another name, and then only after the 37 days a renamed name stays reserved.

How many are about to drop?

Right now we are tracking 43 upcoming name drops, 8 of them expected within the next seven days. Each has a window it is expected to drop in, and the typical window on our list is 8 hours wide: that is how far apart our two looks around the rename were. The names and their countdowns are on the list of upcoming drops.

Where these numbers come from

We ask for the profile of every three-character name, around the clock. A name that answers with a profile has an owner. A name that stops answering had its owner rename, and is scheduled to drop 37 days later. A name with no profile that Mojang refuses to hand out is counted as blocked. The count is our own observation, not a figure published by Mojang, and it can be off by the few names that changed since our last look.
